  1. synchrotron radiation: A form of
  2. electromagnetic radiation created by
  3. charged particles trapped in a
  4. magnetic field. Instead of moving in
  5. straight lines, the particles spiral
  6. around the lines of magnetism. Since
  7. electromagnetic radiation is generated
  8. by oscillating electric charges, these
  9. particles act like tiny transmitters,
  10. broadcasting wavelengths of light
  11. ranging from radio to x-rays.
